Conference
The Scientific Museum, didactics and public: spaces for many voices

Although more slowly than in other countries, the Italian Science Museum has also been renewed. Next to the showcase exhibiting an ancient instrument, today the visitor finds multimedia installations and objects made of poor material intended to be touched and manipulated, illustrating a phenomenon with greater effectiveness and involvement.
The relationship between school and museum has changed, being now declined according to a new complementarity, evident in the case of scholastic disciplines (Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Geography) which often find in the Museum the laboratory which is missing or difficult to manage in the school.
Universities and research institutes exhibit their collections not only to communicate their history but also to orient, update and educate, according to the so-called “Third Mission” goals.
The Museum of Science is thus engaged in the preservation of the cultural heritage, in communicating the contemporary, and in the challenge of weakening those all too widespread prejudices that develop distrust of scientific subjects.
Without claiming to be exhaustive, the conference aims to stimulate discussion on these issues and the exchange of experiences among science museum operators. More over, the conference aims to give voice to the increasing attention reserved to this type of museology by discipline-specific didactics.
The conference program will include general talks about science museology and discussions about concrete cases from various fields of science.
